OUR HERITAGE |
In 1961, under the direction of Rev. Ronald Rice, Mission Pastor from First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, a new mission was started, meeting in the Old Richmond Fire Department and the Old Richmond Grange. Immanuel Baptist Chapel, which means "God with Us" was chosen to be the name. Truly, God was with us in the development of a body of believers.
In 1962, the members, along with the Pilot Mountain Baptist Association and First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, purchased 4.5 acres of land near the corner of Highway 67 and Transou Road. A house on Transou Road was also bought to be used as a worship center until the present sanctuary was built and dedicated in 1965.
Rev. Roger Bolton became the first full-time Pastor of Immanuel Baptist Chapel in 1964. Following Rev. Bolton, Rev. J.A. Bracey, Rev. Douglas Sturgell, Rev. Eddie Brackett, Rev. Jackie Owenby, and Rev. William Yates served the congregation.
Under the leadership of Rev. Eddie Brackett, the church became fully constituted, and the name was changed to Pfafftown Baptist Church on March 21, 1976. The Children's Building was completed in 1979.
The church purchased 16 acres of adjoining land in 1989. During the pastorate of Rev. William Yates, another building was added where the fellowship hall, kitchen, and additional Sunday School classrooms are located. A modular unit was placed on the property to be used by the youth, and is known as "The House".
Dr. Craig W. Bowman was called as Pastor on June 1, 1993. Under his direction, the community missions program of the church was expanded with the start of ministries at Shattalon Oaks and North Forsyth Mobile Home Parks. Dr Bowman was called to another leadership postion in early 2007, but work at Shattalon Oaks continues.
With the leadership of Randy Pulliam, Children's Minister, there are wonderful opportunities for our children in Vacation Bible School, Bible studies, retreats, mission trips, and fellowship. David Lane, Music Minister, leads a full music program for adult, youth, and children's choirs, as well as handbells and ensembles. The Rev. Charles Walker joined our staff in the Spring of 2007 as the Associate Pastor of Student Ministeries and Outreach.
A senior adult group, called TOC, was organized in 2002. Young Christian's Outreach, a ministry to college students and young career singles began in 2003.
Pfafftown Baptist Church is a caring congregation, where the gifts and talents that God has blessed us with can be used to glorify Him and further His Kingdom.
